![]() And the verse before that? “Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it” ( Leviticus 19:26). The verse directly before Leviticus 19:28 states, “Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard” ( Leviticus 19:27). The surrounding passages refer to other rituals associated with paganism. The interesting thing about this passage is that it is often read without context. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. 26 Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times. You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord. ![]() Leviticus 19:28 says, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. 25 And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God. The passage that is most often pointed to as a condemnation of piercings doesn’t actually mention piercings at all. There’s only one verse in the entire Bible that even mentions tattoos (Leviticus 19:28), and it isn’t as straightforward as it initially appears. However, there is one verse that may not cast piercing in a favorable light. Take 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and add the preceding verse, verse 18, and it reads like this: Flee from sexual immorality. However, the entire passage (1 Corinthians 6:12-20) is specifically about sexual immorality. Instead, the passage shows this as God honoring and loving Jerusalem. Others have pointed to verses such as 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 as prohibitive of things such as piercings or tattoos. It seems unlikely that God would paint an image of Himself engaging in a sinful practice. As God talks about His lavish love for Israel in Ezekiel 16, comparing Jerusalem to His wife, He says, “And I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head” ( Ezekiel 16:12). One passage in the Bible shows a positive correlation with piercings.
